Behind a samovar. 2011
Canvas, oil. 90×75 cm
Samovar is puffing and warming. It's laughing at lovers talk, but serving faithfully - warm tea is so pleasant. A beautiful girl impresses with her bright dress, and a young man flaunts his blue bow tie.
Painting is a precious carpet. Every brushstroke is an ornament here. And I would really like to make my audience smile and maybe make people willing to sit and enjoy a cup of tasty tea.
The lovers are talking quietly.
A groom prepared a gift, a girl held her breath. The moon is shining upon a landscape with lilac and old extensive spruce. But a perfect moment is interrupted by a child running away from his nanny.
We are involuntary spectators of this scene, because lilac beauty attracted us.
The story of this painting is related to my impressions of Abramtsevo Manor. Right there, while sitting on a bench I got an idea. I clearly imagined a manor under the moonlight, people leaving the house, landscape with lilac.
Canvas, oil. 80x90 cm
It's hard to emphasize one or another painting of mine. I love each work I create but I understand that there are paintings that are main at a given time. "Annunciation" is one of them.
Many artists referred to the plot where Archangel Gabriel was annunciating Virgin Mary about future birth of Jesus Christ.
I wanted to link this plot with Russian house world.
Remembering a cozy house of grandmother Masha I thought that Annunciation could happen in a such atmosphere.
Christmas photo (The holy family). 2012
Canvas, oil. 95×80 cm
For a long time I could not implement this plot in a clear and understandable composition.
Then I decided to let the idea go. No, not like this.
But one day I woke up in the morning and immediately,
with a few pencil strokes I drew a composition.
It was an epiphany.
I imagined a scene in a photo shop of the beginning of XXth century. A family came to take a souvenir photo.
The baby appeared in color at the picture while his parents stayed black and white. Photograph captured the miracle!
It's amazing but I still cannot abandon this painting.
It's important to feel it close to me. An interesting fact that this work opened a door to new images and to what I do today.
Best friends. 2020
Canvas, oil. 80x80 cm
This painting is special. It is based on a story about a waxwing that I called Styopa. He suddenly appeared in my house. A rowan tree was to blame, a rowan tree that made Styopa tipsy – he fell of the tree, forgot how to fly and ended up in my hands. Thanks to my friends – they saved him!
In the painting Pablo is looking at his new friend in surprise – that was his reaction at that moment. There has been no panic or angry cry from Styopa. We welcomed this bird in our family and hope he remembers flying rules and if he doesn't – we will let him live long and please us with his incredible singing.
I have been working in such a humorous, sincere and naive manner since 2010 when I appealed to “A la Russe” theme for the first time.
I started the 2020th year with this painting and it was an important sign – I should continue that theme. I created this collection with rapture, eagerness and peace of mind. No preliminary sketches – everything had been in my head already.
A beauty in a bright red headscarf looks ahead with hope - winter is followed by spring. An effigy is being burnt, a table is decorated with pancakes and samovar. Guests are coming and each of them is busy with something.
Winter in the village. 2020
While an oil lamp is "warming” the icon a boy is having a fairytale dream – it cannot be otherwise when you sleep in the loft!
We, along with the boy are floating over the winter village: snow tenderly covered the roofs, the light smoke is coming out of the chimneys, the moon and stars are creating a fairytale atmosphere.
There are three figures in the street – the frost does not prevent them from communicating and you decide what they are talking about!
Ah, how I wish I took a steam in a Russian bathhouse! I painted it here, for myself, even two of them – for each yard and house.
A dance. 2020
Canvas, oil. 90x80 cm
An accordion played, a girl kissed a modest young man and the dance started!
A white headscarf with rich pattern is an exquisite attribute of Russian girl: her beauty is worth men admiration. But one of them is upset – she doesn’t belong to him…An old man is peering, estimating something sarcastically and only the dancer doesn’t think about anything, he is in love.
Pomegranate for the Last Supper. 2019
Canvas, oil. 100x120 cm
In 2019 theme of last supper of Christ captured my imagination again. Besides, even such simple living situations like buying new books about Leonardo DaVinci guided my thoughts. The culmination was the day when being at the market I could not find any bread which was to be a subject of my new painting but I found ripe pomegranates.
I think all the angels painted with me. A brush was creating an ornamental composition easily and naturally. Pastose strokes revealed hands, ripe pomegranates, vegetative ornament.
Meeting with Salvador. Cadaqués. 2018
Canvas, oil. 80х80 cm
We were taking a narrow and steep road to Cadaques. This small town in Catalonia with a cozy bay charmed me a several years ago, and this time I wanted to show it to my friends. It greeted us with an excellent weather, tasty food and light wine.
Of course I knew that Salvador Dali painted his first works here. My modest house is embellished with the reproduction and I am in love with this painting. We visited Dali's house located near Cadaques in Portligat. And there, the second time, I had a special feeling – sense of cozy home. Here I saw him, a young genius with kind eyes.
Stranger with a cigarette. 2018
Canvas, oil. 93x70 cm
One waitress of Tivoli's cafe became a prototype for this spectacular stranger. Her look attracted me so I made a decision to have lunch there.
I was observing her with curiosity: she was smoking in a pretty manner and looking at passerby. That was her feature that served as a basis of my painting. Everything else was my imagination and inspiration.
I think it's impossible to resist the look of this gorgeous stranger!
Torquoise Madonna. 2018
Canvas, oil. 100x70 cm
The painting originates from the story that happened in an ancient town in the south of Italy. There I painted from life a few times but the idea with Madonna's image pursued me constantly. I associated Matera with this strong woman from distant past.
But how to paint her? I found a solution when I was leaving a town by train. Through the train windows I could see a wonderful landscape with fields stretching all over small hills.
There I saw her - in a long scarf hiding her dress of turquoise shade, but the most importantly, I saw her powerful look. She found me and it was a great happiness!
Marfa in a bathhouse. 2020
Canvas, oil. 80x70 cm
Marfa and a waxwing. 2020
Canvas, oil. 100x80 cm
The sun shone brightly through the window and I was in high spirits. I don’t know why but I remembered my child’s drawing where I depicted a beautiful girl in a yellow headscarf and a dress with pink tulips. A plot of new painting was created immediately. Memories are great power!
I added a waxwing Styopa to the composition. He is a herald which is listened by Marfa attentively.
There is a Russian village panorama in the background: green expanses, river and modest houses.
Story of the Creation. 2018
Canvas, oil. 95х70 cm
You may watch stars infinitely or enjoy the first rays of sun. At these moments dreams take you away. For instance,
I dream to open my exhibition in space and believe it's possible.
But this work is not about dreams but it's about the time being. The Universe gave us life as it gave art to the artist. And you never want to break this connection. The miracle has already happened, but why don't many people understand this?
< Amsterdam Goddess. 2015
Paper, tempera. 29,7x21 cm
Amsterdam. Night, street. Among the windows of neon red I've noticed one courtesan. Having come up to her and having touched her rough skin I felt her sweet smell and looked into her face...These eyes were looking straight into my soul. I am not able to forget them – eyes from bottomless imagination.
Marina is eating Natasha’s waffle. 2016 >
Bruges is a real-life fairy tale. There are strawberries and waffles, beautiful sky and mood, love and separation. What to choose? I want to try everything!
Silent steps. Ostuni. 2018 >
Canvas. oil. 93х70 cm
Night. Narrow streets of snow-white Ostuni are silent.
You are taking your steps like you are taking a path of life: up, down... Such a loneliness. Comprehension. And a permanent desire to turn this or that direction. There is a deadlock waiting for you somewhere or a perfect view instead.
That's what my painting is all about!
Secret meeting. Matera. 2018 >>
Canvas, oil. 90х70 cm
Honestly, I was not planning to paint the Crucifixion. But I couldn't stop thinking about a story of me sneaking in an ancient cave of Matera where I saw an old fresco with Crucifixion. It really impressed me at that time.
The painting came out extraordinary, but I cannot understand in what. Perhaps it's a mood of work: mysterious but not tragic. It has something elusive, eternal. In the other hand, it's simple and laconic. And Crucifixion as a window to parallel world.
